    Two years before you would have got a different reply because selling a house was easier than now. My priority date is Jan 06, EB3-I, but we bought a house because of our personal choice. We wanted to give our daughter a nice environment to grow with friends. Why should she suffer because of the delays in GC?

    Not buying a house doesn't hold you up to a location, especially if you are in consulting but again if you want to settle down and travel less, with EAD, it is still OK to buy a house. As long as you have some saving to take you through just in case you have to go out of the country and come again, you should be OK. If you don't want to risk it and space is not a concern, renting is not bad at all. House in the US according to me is not an investment purely on dollar value but the quality of life is way better than renting. If you will lose sleep just because you made a major investment, then hold on for few more years.

    Guys,
    Thats what my Question is......how i am gonna prove it i paid 3k for my H1. They are deducting 500 (for my H1) everymonth from my paycheck in the name of CASH ADVANCE DEDUCTION.
    I really want to teach them a lesson....so that they stop messing many vulenerable people like me who go to them every year. Could somebody tell me how i am gonna complain DOL in new jersey about this company and does DOL really takes any action.
    Greencard is not i am much looking for......i am planning to go back to india after 2-3 years.

    Here is the starting point. One way to do this to start from 'Wage & Hour Division' of US DOL. In NJ, this could be reported to the district office of US DOL at the following contact information.

    Will soon post specific regulation that says your employer cannot deduct H1 fee from your paycheck. Although, no one is going to dispute that, it is always good to keep it available to show it to DOL officer to put additional weight in your conversation, so that DOL officer knows that you have done your research and know the rules and regulations.

    Also, DOL will tell you to file WH-4 form. They will assure you that you identity will will kept confidential. So you will never have to tell your employer that you are the one you cmplaint. They will simply plan a visit to your employer's office and summon all the records. And the truth will be know.

    Sorry for the delay. I was out of action for the last week or so and hence couldn't reply earlier. Thanks for your suggestions and keep them coming.

    We have added more words to the meta keywords of the site. However we do have to realize that what really matters in Search Engine rankings is the linking from other sites. Hence as we're getting more and more exposure, more sites link to us and it is boosting our ranking.

    While I am awaiting those changes, I did the same search again at Google. The first 2 results are for immigrationvoice.org

    This is a good discussion. Hope others benefit from it !

    I recently purchased 250K term-insurance policy for $11.66 per-month from NY Life. I'm 30 yrs old and qualified for their top-level health rate (eating right and exercise has financial benefits !). I guess they are the only good ones who sell policies to H1. Also, my policy has terminal illness coverage meaning that they'll pay out the amount in-case of terminal illness even if I'm not dead. I have another 100K coverage from employer (no cost). I'm not covering 10 times my current salary but I'm calculating by using equivalent Indian salary and not US. I consider myself amply covered. Also, my policy will remain active even if I decide not to wait for GC and move to India.

    Now my 2 cents about Term vs. Whole Life debate. It doesn't make any sense to buy whole-life at young age. But since the cost of term maybe prohibitively high at 60+ one should convert to whole-life at some point unless one can find/buy a fixed rate policy till 80 or something (plan to die a little b4 that :D )

    Congressional leaders have begun to discuss legislation that would sharply increase the number of high-skilled foreign workers who could become permanent U. S. residents in the next few years. While it's sure to be controversial, the measure, if it passes, could mean more than 100,000 additional green cards would become available for skilled workers, perhaps even doubling the 140,000 that are allotted each year. "There are some discussions going on informally," says Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), who chairs the House subcommittee on immigration.

    A sharp increase in green cards would come as a relief to many, particularly in the tech industry. High-skilled foreign workers have become increasingly upset in recent years because the wait to gain the cards, which confer permanent residency, has stretched to five or more years for certain applicants. Technology companies, including IBM (IBM), Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOG), and eBay (EBAY), have also advocated for more skilled workers from other countries to be let into the country.

    In my humble opinion, if people who have been illegal in US for over 5 years are granted legality, then the govt should

    1) Close the backlog processing centers where our cases have been languishing for years

    2) Grant us green cards if we can show minimal proof that we did infact file for permanancy legally at some point in time.

    I mean COME ON guys..the government is giving legal status to more than 10 MILLION illegals in this country, yet when it comes to 300,000 tax paying, qualified, LEGAL, degree holding H1B workers, the same government is penny pinching and trapping us in a bureaucratic paper nightmare. What is 300,000 when compared to like 13 Million?? Its a drop in the bucket. Do not forget that our employers have paid big bucks for every H1B, and additionally paid for the creation of the backlog reduction center, where they are painstakingly poring over each and every case with a toothcomb.

    in the long run, it is going to be extremely BAD/HARD for skilled immigrants..
    I couldn't confirm it but from what I understand, the dual intent will no longer be valid on H1 ie A H1-B holder cannot have an immigrant intent. Does that mean, they cannot file for a GC, while on H1? Also, as consulting would be severely restricted, how many of the H1s will be able to find Full-Time Jobs?

    As we read more into the Bill, the 'hidden' intent is becoming clear..

    My dear friend this statement that you made is BS. Pls read the bill draft carefully, actually they have added dual intent to even F1 in some catagories. They have not taken dual intent off H1b visas. Our major killer is however the restrictions imposed for extension beyond 6 years. We need the employer's recomendation + >365 days pending 140. I dont know whether one of these would suffice or whether both would be needed??? Otherwise it looks not VERY bad, but bad.

    Indaianabacklog --- Why the he** dont you understand you are born in the damn country with Billion people? But if you are not, then yes its a surprise. But how are you ROW?
    And also from my experience --- You got to keep poking the USCIS authorities for them to wake up and take your application to process.

    Let me tell you my story:

    My company applied for my extension after 1st 3 yrs of H1 last year in Sept. I expected to get extension before Nov and I had planned to go to India in December. Well the dec came and I did not have extension, but I went to India as I was supposed to hoping that the extension would just arrive. Dec over, Jan over, Feb over, I am sitting Idle at home in India. Then I called USCIS- the officer told that since I left the country while extension applied and my h1 has expired, it means I have abondoned my application.. What the f***. Well, later I started following up with my h1 company.
    Finally my office Amin staff personally went into USCIS office, explaining my situation and also showing proof that the client is waiting for me to get back and start work, I got h1 extension approved on Jul 24th.. What a relief.

    Ran to Chennai for stamping and flew into Bay Area. Next day Med appointments cause i was to file 485 before Aug 17th.
    Oh Gosh! I could barely do that and my application reached the NSC on Aug 17th. Now got the receipt numbers.

    So Unless you keep poking them You wont hear updates. Just my 2 points experience in the swarm of people here.

    1.) Personal Choice

    2.) Job security.

    If you work for a good company - buy one. If your job is dicey, don't.

    Personal need + good job = House
